The Bidayuh ( LAND DAYAK) Dilemma

By Concerned Bidayuh

Much has been said about the Bidayuh Community’s disappointment in not getting any of their 3 Members of Parliament appointed as a deputy minister in the Federal Cabinet.

Given their unquestionable record of being always pro-BN and the bastion of state and federal seats for the BN (to quote a top federal leader: Bidayuhs have always been friends of BN), it is indeed a letdown that they would be happy just to get a deputy minister’s post as their reward. Why do they think they do not deserve a full federal minister’s post?

If the die is cast because PM Najib Abdul Razak has finalized and announced his line-up, why not offer our PM an alternative to consider!

Nobody from the community has ever been appointed a Senator. Would this not be an opportune time to consider a gesture, like appointing a prominent Bidayuh to represent the community in the Senate?

We have in our mind such a person who is a very senior member of a Dayak-based BN component party and holding a high ranking post in the party.

From the community’s perspective, he holds the record of being the longest serving President of Dayak Bidayuh National Association (13 years) and contributing significantly to the progress to the association and community at large. With such a background, he is very articulate in Bidayuh issues and needs. Apart from being a former educationist with a master’s degree, he is now a political secretary to the Chief Minister.

Fair, isn’t it, to ask for something we truly deserve? Are we asking too much as compared to certain quarters not occupying a seat in parliament but yet given senatorship just to occupy a ministerial post?

Najib to face a Bidayuh mutiny?

By Joe Tawie

The Dayak Bidayuhs - numbering more than 200,000 in Sarawak - once again feel slighted when none of their three parliamentarians was included in the recently-formed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s cabinet.

The three MPs - Richard Riot (Serian MP from the Sarawak United People’s Party), James Dawos Mamit (Mambong, Parti Pesaka Bumiputra) and Dr Tiki Lafe (Mas Gading, Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party) - have received negative reactions from their constituents as a result of them being overlooked by Najib.

Some called for them to resign their seats in order to show their displeasure against the Najib government, while others have called on them to join PKR.

The three MPs admitted receiving many SMSes from their supporters and members of the Bidayuh community.

“I know that the prime minister has the prerogative to appoint members of his cabinet, but by not appointing one from the Bidayuh community, he has made his 1Malaysia concept a mere rhetoric,” said Dawos (photo) when asked by journalists.

Tiki, when contacted, also expressed disappointment and said he was now on the ground to seek feedback from his constituents on the next course of action to be taken.

This is the second time that the Bidayuh community has been sidelined from the cabinet.

After the March 2008 general election, the community was excluded from the cabinet of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Tiki (photo) was a member of the Abdullah government but was dropped from the cabinet after the 2008 general election.

His place was taken over by another SPDP leader and a member of the Orang Ulu community, Jacob Dungau Sagan.

Last year, there were rumours that Riot and Tiki were on the verge of joining the opposition.

Riot and 1,000 supporters burnt their Sarawak United People’s Party (Supp) membership cards but he and Tiki withdrew their threats after BN leaders met them.

Bidayuhs are penumpang’

In a related development former Mas Gading MP and Star president Dr Patau Rubis (photo) urged the Bidayuh community to stop complaining and give Najib a chance to settle into his job.

“All the Bidayuhs are penumpang (passengers) of other people’s boats and we should not complain. We do not have a voice,” he said, adding that the Bidayuhs were now further divided after joining PKR.

Another Bidayuh leader Patrick Anek Uren, also a former MP for Mas Gading, called on Tiki to quit as MP as he had failed to represent the community in the federal government.

“As an MP, you are elected by the people and to serve them as well as to deliver all things that benefit the people. It is not a privilege for you to seek employment for yourself.

“I think Tiki has failed us and I demand his resignation immediately,” said Anek, who was noted for his oratory and courage for fighting for the Bidayuhs’ interests.

Echoing Anek’s comments, PKR Bidayuh chief coordinator Granda Aing said the three MPs should become independents or join his party.

Otherwise, he said, their worth was only RM4 million, referring to the money given by Najib to the Bidayuh community a couple of months ago.

Former president of the deregistered Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Daniel Tajem said that the Bidayuhs should not complain as they were always very close to the BN government.

“Accept whatever is given to the community,” he said.

PKR plans monitoring panel for Batang Ai

By Joe Tawie

PKR has agreed to form a committee to monitor the implementation of projects promised during the recent Batang Ai by-election.

The defeated candidate, PKR’s Jawah Gerang, said that in the next few days they will sit down to find out what are the projects that have been promised.

The committee comprising Dominique Ng, state assemblyman for Padungan, Jawah and Nicholas Bawin, chairman of the PKR Lubok Antu Division and some local people would be visiting the constituency soon to find out what were the projects that the Barisan Nasional had promised.

“I know that some of the projects like the Lemanak Road have been promised at least three times already and until today the projects are yet to be implemented,” said Jawah, adding that the projects were promised during his five terms as the Lubok Antu member of parliament.
During the campaign for the by-election, close to RM200 million worth of projects were promised for the people of Batang Ai.

These projects include:

A multi-million ringgit hospital

RM2 million for upgrading and repairing of longhouses

RM6 million for electrification programme

RM2.5 million for telecommunication tower and community broadband centre

RM40.2 million for universal service provision (USP) projects

RM62 million for tar-sealing the seven-kilometre Lemanak Road, the survey design of Lemanak-Engkari road and the tar-sealing of 10km ring roads in Batang Ai.
Gov’t promises land titles

The BN government has also promised to settle unpaid claims as a result of the construction of

the Batang Ai hydro-electric dam and to issue land titles to landowners.

Jawah who secured 2,053 votes lost to the BN candidate Malcolm Mussen Lamoh by a majority of 1854 votes.

Yesterday, Ng together with Bawin and Jawah visited Batang Ai and held a meeting with the people, assuring them that PKR would not abandon them.

“We tell them, we will not abandon them. In fact we tell them to be ready for the next round of state election. We must prepare early,” said Ng said when contacted today.

He said that the group also went to Engkilili which forms the other state constituency of the Lubok Antu parliamentary constituency, where they met the local PKR members and advised them to be ready for the next state election.

Meanwhile, Ng said that PKR would not retract its claims that that 14 boxes had been tampered with in the recently-concluded Batang Ai by-election, adding that the party was now conducting investigations into the matter.

The findings would be submitted to PKR headquarters in Kuala Lumpur by April 15.
Money politics and ‘tampered’ ballot boxes

PKR did badly in these areas from where the 14 ballot boxes came and what puzzled them was

that these areas were known to be the opposition’s stronghold.
The 14 ballot boxes were either flown or carried by boats from the polling centres to the tallying centre.

PKR had one week before polling written to the Election Commission to have the votes counted at the polling centres, but their request was rejected.

Their request to accompany the boxes in the helicopters or in the boats was also rejected by the commission.

“After our findings have been submitted to the headquarters, then we will know what course of action is to be taken,” said Ng.

In Sibu, Sarawak DAP chairman Richard Wong alleged money politics was involved in the Batang Ai by-election and wanted the Election Commission to look into it.

He alleged that the BN government had spent up to RM70 million in upgrading the road projects and other infrastructures during the campaigning period and alleged that each family was given some cash in the name of development fund.

He said that in other countries a lot of what the BN government and politicians had done during the campaign would have been illegal under their election laws.

LETS TOPPLE BN!!!!

By Freelance writer

Today is the final day of campaigning. Both BN and PKR will go all outin the next couple of hours to convince voters to vote for their respective candidates.

Actually, nothing much can be done with most of the voters having made up their minds, except those ‘fence-sitters’ who may decide until polling tomorrow whom to vote. Even so, things may well change in the next couple of hours, especially with BN’s mighty financial means by‘enticing’ or ‘rewarding’ voters on the eve of polling .( Note: MAFREL should monitor and that no such things will happen. PKR must also be very alert))

Even nearing polling ,BN has admitted it may not fulfil all those promises made or be able to meet the demands of the people of Btg Ai.Taib himself said that being a rural area Btg Ai doesn’t deserve to have an hospital, Not enough doctors? What a lame excuse!! A rural area? So it means all other rural areas in Sarawak can forget about having hospitals. So much so of BN’s promise to look after the welfare of the people.

Then, why did Taib offiiate the ground breaking of Giat Mara? Isn’t that also not worth having, since Btg Ai is rural, with a small population. What if there were not enough trainers/personnel? Then it’d be another ‘white elephant’ or would it be just another ground breaking project. After election, nothing - gone with the wind!!!

Now, it seems that there will be more roads to be built (promised) in a space of weeks ,if not, days. That’s quick as lightning approval. Suddenly, BN become so efficient or is it that only now BN realised Btg Ai deserve roads.

There so many other promises made.( No need to mention them here) The people of Btg Ai have never had it so good. Not sure whether to be elated and applaud BN for such good deeds. But perhaps, one would be more inclined to feel sorry for the people of Btg Ai. No doubt, Btg. Ai has been truly neglected all these years. The great pretenders in BN are in ‘top gear’ and full of ‘action ‘ once again!!!

Oh well, that’s BN way of holding on to power by whatever means, including pouring money, lying to the people and bombarding ‘threats’against the people if they don’t vote BN.

Undoubtedly, all those hardworking BN Ministers/YBs will be well-rewarded after this by-election. More businesses, new and bigger houses, and all other precious things. But the people will remain as they are now - living from hand to mouth.

That’s the sad facts of the real situations in Sarawak. The continued rule of BN will lead to further miseries to the people especially the Ibans (Dayaks). The gap between the rich and powerful, and the poor will be greater.

All Sarawakians - wake up! Let’s topple BN. Lets start that with the defeat of BN in Batang Ai (N29).

Vote PKR- Vote Jawah.

VOTERS RETURN HOME TO BATANG AI

1. Voters return home to Batang Ai

Several scores of voters who are working in the cities, towns and in Peninsula Malaysia are returning today to Batang Ai to cast their votes for tomorrow’s by-election. Many are going on their own transport, but some are using buses already arranged for them by both the Barisan onal and Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

PKR hopes that these working voters who are more knowledgeable in issues being discussed regarding NCR land, unpaid claims and lack of development, muddy roads, lack of electricity and clean water supply, may be able to influence their parents, uncles, aunties and their siblings to vote for PKR candidate, Jawah Gerang.

PKR also hopes that pensioners should help by telling their relatives that the BN government is not fair to Ibans in terms of recruitment into the civil service and in promotions, entry into universities and scholarships, etc.

Unless the aged voters or the longhouse voters are told about all these, they may not understand about these issues and are confused by the promises of development and financial assistance.

2. Menteri Besar Selangor campaigns in Lubok Antu shops and market

Menteri Besar Selangor Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim early this morning campaigned at the Lubok Antu bazaar and talked to shopkeepers and people in the market.

PRS president James Masing and his team also campaigned in the market, after Tan Sri Khalid has left.

The Menteri Besar then left for Buie not far from the Hydro-electric dam. He was accompanied by Datuk Sri Daniel Tajem. The Menteri Besar is expected to return to Kuala Lumpur later today.

3. Mafrel is fair, says Peter JohnIn

The Borneo Post today, PRS president James Masing questioned the fairness of the election watchdog Malaysians for free and fair election in its coverage of the by-election in Batang Ai. Its interim report recently only covered the supposed wrong doings of Barisan Nasional and not the opposition.

Masing said that Mafrel should have reported the incidences of the opposition tearing down and vandalizing BN posters. One billboard at the junction leading to the Batang Ai hydro-electric dam was vandalized and a police report had been lodged over the matter.

He regretted that Mafrel did not seem to bother about the incident apparently because they were more focus on reporting the bad side of BN.

Peter John Jaban, Mafrel chief, today said that nobody reported the matter to him. However, when they found out, they had taken photograph of the vandalized billboard.

Peter said: “For information of the public, we have not submitted any report on the by-election. The game is not over yet. How can he say we are unfair?“

He must have seen reports done by other people. Certainly not our report,” he said and pointed out that Mafrel also covered functions carried out by PKR.

4. BN rating goes up?

Following reports of Ting Ling Kiew, deputy president of SNAP and Ambrose Labang and three other PKR leaders joining BN, the BN rating for the Batang Ai goes up in a similar fashion when Dr. Mahathir rejoins UMNO the rating of BN in Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang also goes up. This assessment is done by BN leaders.

According to PKR sources, “Manok Labang” who has so many baggages attached to him is more a liability than an asset. He has no “tuah, only tuah chelaka”. When the other fighting cock dies, this "Manok Labang" runs away.

In the Iban culture, when a fighting cock runs away when its opponent is dying, it is known as that fighting cock having “tuah chelaka”.

5. Don’t believe contents of CDs and pamphlets, says Awang

Voters in Batang Ai have been advised not to be taken in by the contents of the pamphlets and CDs which contained negative elements, said Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, second minister of planning and resource management and a senior vice president of PBB.

It is true that PKR and NGOs have been distributing thousands of pamphlets and CDs to all the longhouses detailing how land and survey department staff which is under Awang Tengah’s ministry destroyed Iban longhouses allegedly built on State land, how oil palm companies have chased Ibans away from their NCR land and have destroyed their cash crops, their pepper, rubber and fruit tree gardens. All these are being put into CDs and are distributed free of charge.

The strategy by PKR to distribute the CDs and pamphlets must be very effective so much so that the second most powerful minister has to advise the people not to be taken in by the contents.

According to reports received by The Broken Shield many of those who have seen the CDs were seen crying.

More to come…stay tune to http://www.thebrokenshield.blogspot.com/P/S: I will be going to Batang Ai to today (6 April) to cover the by-election and will only be back to Kuching late evening of 7 April. To all voters the of Batang Ai, I wish you good luck and success.

"SATU LAWAN SATU"

Source: http://thebrokenshield.blogspot.com/

The Daily Updated News from Batang Ai By-Election
---------------------------------

1. 'Satu lawan satu'

Jawah Gerang (pic, right) of PKR is facing Malcolm Mussen of Barisan Nasional in the Batang Ai
by-election announced on Thursday.

Sone 10,000 people were present to send their respective candidates to the nomination centre. While the Parti Keadilan Sarawak’s supporters were from local people, the BN’s supporters came from civil servants, council staff and etc.

Johnny Chuat, an Iban blogger and producer of Iban magazine, failed to submit his papers even though he went inside the nomination centre. However, when he came out, he wore PKR shirt and called his supporters to support Jawah Gerang.

2. An encounter with James Masing

One day before nomination day, the small town of Lubok Antu was full of people literally to its brims. Wherever you went, you were bound to meet the same people.

While looking for food, three of us – myself, my colleague and our driver – we met Masing, the BN director of operations and his supporters. After finishing our food, we thought it be discourteous if we did not say hello to the minister.

So we shook hands with him. I was the last to do so. “Hello, YB Dr.” I said. Replying, he said: “Why is your Broken Shield always broken?”

“Well, because its parts and pieces are still with PBB, SUPP, SPDP, PRS, and other parties. Unless all Dayaks are united under one political party, the Shield will always remain broken”, I said. Masing looked rather uncomfortable.

3. The pig that did not die

Whatever Ibans do such as farming, constructing a house, working in distant land, “miring” (rites) is part of the custom.

When Malcolm Mussen procceded to the nomination centre yesterday, a “miring” ceremony was performed.

Part of the ceremony was for him to spear a pig. Usually after the pig has died, its livers were scrutinized carefully looking for any strange or unusual formation.

However, in Mussen’s case, they did not look at the livers as they had to hurry to the nomination centre. After they had left, someone found out that the pig was still alive. It had to be speared for the second time. What does this signify? Bad omen?

4. Dominique Ng causes a stir

During yesterday’s nomination day, the entire cabinet of Abdul Taib Mahmud were present. Sabah’s deputy chief minister Joseph Kitingan and two federal ministers were present.

A special tent was constructed for the VVIPs so that they could drink and wait for the outcome of the nomination. Another one was constructed for the Opposition.

Dominique Ng (pic above, left), PKR State assemblyman went to the tent housing the VVIPs to take photographs when one of the VVIPs asked him whether he went to the wrong place and that he should change his shirt. (Dominique at that time was wearing PKR shirt).

“No. I am happy with my baju,” he replied.

“Then you better leave, we do not want you,” said Alfred Jabu, deputy chief minister and deputy president of PBB.

“After this, we also do not want you,” replied Dominique.

“You talk big,” remarked Abdul Taib Mahmud, chief minister and president of PBB to the laughters of all present.

“Don’t worry, we are all big,” said Dominique before he was pulled away by a security personnel.

5. About RM500,000 spent on nomination day

About 5,000 BN supporters were present at the padang during the nomination day yesterday holding BN flags.

It was said that each participant was paid RM40.00 That will come to RM200,000. What about money spent on drinks and food for the VVIPs and other invited guests?

And claims, travelling and lodging allowances of civil servants? There were more than 800 police personnel present. That day alone not less than RM500,000 was spent.

Jawah Gerang Calon Pakatan Rakyat Untuk DUN Batang Ai (N29)

ONE DAYAK, ONE PEOPLE, ONE FATE

Fellow Sarawakians,

We have all been discriminated and marginalized by BN government one way or another. WE must all work together to give Sarawak HARAPAN BARU.
Allow me to address just one part of our beloved Sarawak society. Since Batang Ai is an IBAN majority area, this message is for Dayak Iban voters in Batang Ai.

PKR as West Malaysia Based Party

PKR is a registered national political party in Malaysia. It does not differentiate you by race, class or religion. It is JUSTICE party for all Malaysian. PKR members are united as one in Malaysia within one political organization with justice and equality as its main political platform.

BARISAN NASIONAL
Is also a national based political grouping of many political parties? The lead party is United Malay Nasional Organization or better known as UMNO Baru.
The difference with PKR is - it has a racialist approach towards politic hiding under the guise of "national unity".
􀂃 UMNO for Malay only ( with exception of Sabah).
􀂃 MCA is for Chinese
􀂃 MIC is Indian
􀂃 SUPP is for Sarawak Chinese Agenda
􀂃 PBB is Sarawak Dayak and Malay/Melanau for Taib’s / Jabu agenda
􀂃 SPDP is for all Sarawakian
􀂃 PRS is for ( I don’t know - very confusing)
􀂃 Gerakan / PPP / and parties from Sabah

How can we Malaysian be united as one with so many parties and with so many leaders with personal agenda.
Do you seriously think that non Malay could be the Prime Minister of Malaysia under the BN organization?
Could non Malay become Malaysian Prime Minister under PKR / PR? The answer is definitely yes.

Why are we Dayak being discriminated against?
PBB Taib works very closely with UMNO for his selfish agenda of retaining power and extracts Sarawak wealth for personal use. UMNO needed Taib to be in power to stay as Federal Government and also Sarawak MONEY to finance certain UMNO leaders. Taib used the same money to "control" Dayak through Dayak elected representatives.
Leading the Dayak betrayal is Jabu and Masing. Mawan is quiet now as he can read Dayak sentiment. SUPP - is quiet, knowing that the wind of change can blow either way and they will ride with it - as long as there is business and money, SUPP members wanted that money more than all things else. SUPP are a bunch of opportunist people. SUPP will never lift their finger to help the Dayak.

To Taib / UMNO, a strong Dayak will undermine UMNO agenda of KETUANAN MELAYU in Malaysia generally and in Sarawak, specifically. Both PBB and UMNO then work together - "Najib says Taib is my best friend" meaning they can push for KETUANAN MELAYU agenda even much more than before.

Who split the Dayak?

Dr. James Jemut Masing is the politician who split the Dayak only because he has a personal agenda in politic. Now he calls for Dayak unity - when his PRS party has no foundation and strength to make such a call?

Taib will continue to use Jabu to confuse the Dayak. Jabu is successful in confusing the Dayak to an extent. But the Dayak is rising against his brand of politics. The Dayakbaru is totally going against Jabu politic. Jabu’s politic belittle the intelligence of educated Dayak: His favourites are:
􀂃 anang ngelaban perintah
􀂃 mina perintah aja ulih nulong kitai
􀂃 kitai anang bejako ke bansa diri aja laban orang enggai meda kitai
􀂃 kitai ngatur pemansang Dayak ngena jalai ari dalam.
Some of these ideas are good. But Jabu has not delivered on his message. His behavior is totally against his political concept. Big talk but no result - thus Dayak disunity under BN.
Anang ngelaban perintah

His attack of Dayak in general and Dayak NGOs weaken Dayak support for BN. For Masing, what has he done to the Dayak?. Masing do not even have any "political concept" of his own to start with except of wanting to be a Minister in Sarawak cabinet.
Has PRS any vision for Sarawak? Never heard of one. I have listened to their leaders speaking in functions, none spoke on their vision for the future.

PRS is a party without vision.

Mina perintah aja tau nulong kitai

Any government would help the people who voted for them. In Sarawak, the BN government is not helping the people in a sincere way. In everything they BN do, there is a hidden agenda of "personal profit", "personal interest" at the expense of the larger majority of people.
Government is elected by the people. The people now has a very viable and good alternative in Pakatan Rakyat. It is time we change to Pakatan Rakyat.

Dayak is United

Dayak is NOT united under Barisan Nasional. But NOW - Dayakbaru is UNITED under Pakatan Rakyat.

PR is not Sarawak

YESSSS - PR is not Sarawak. People in PR are from Sarawak and made up of all races in Sarawak too. PR do not divide people by State. Dividing politic through different States is a fail approach in politic. Look at Gerakan, PPP - for BN Sarawak component party that is what they fear most - being made irrelevant by the new voters who has totally different understanding of politic and a much more pragmatic approach towards unity.

WE Dayakbaru do not owe anything to BN. Their leaders took enough of Sarawak wealth for personal richest.

Our Malaysian UNITY is our Malaysian identity. Governing the country through the collaboration of "racial party" is Malaysia’s time bomb. We will hold on to narrow political values and in development BN will always discriminate.
Pakatan Rakyat give you the real deal of being united in one party and across the nation, not just one or a few State.

ONE DAYAK, ONE PEOPLE, ONE FATE

One Dayak - reject BN and Taib effort to split Dayak into Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Lun Bawang, Penan, etc. We will not have any political strength if we allow Dayak to be split in that manner.
ONE people - we are one with all Malaysian. The Dayak being the indigenous people of Sarawak must be accepted as equal by other Malaysian. We have the same rights as others as Malaysian.
One Fate - the fate of Malaysian is also our fate. If Malaysia fail, we also fail with the rest.
When we vote for PR / PKR in Batang Ai, we vote for change to uphold ONE DAYAK, ONE PEOPLE and ONE FATE with all Malaysian.

Conclusion
Our journey has started. The change that we want has happened in 5 States in West Malaysia. BN has been defeated in 2 By-election. Now there are three By-elections and we Malaysian as ONE people must response to BN poor approach of managing Malaysia (they are still thinking that they can buy anything with money) by voting the next government PAKATAN RAKYAT.
Pakatan Rakyat will not discriminate us through race, colour and religion. UMNO is the source of all this disunity, political tension in the country. UMNO is not able to lead us Malaysian out of this economic trouble because they only have ONE solution - push more money.
Out of RM$60 billion economic package, Sarawak is given RM1.2 billion for infra-structure. Is that fair to Sarawak when we contribute so much money from our oil and gas resources.
Pakatan Rakyat will give Sarawak 20% oil royalty that is much more money for Sarawak compared to what is given by BN to Sarawak today (in economic stimulus package!). If it is not an economic stimulus package we might not have received any. All stimulus are given to people who are 1000 times better than us dayak living in Batang Ai

Where are the Iban (Sea Dayak) Warriors In Politics???

Written by YB Encik Voon Lee Shan *

Rentap, the most famous Iban warrior in Sarawak

Iban people were traditionally brave people. They feared no one and were well known for their bravery. History told us that they also had good leaders, who were capable to enter into military alliances with one another and able to moblilize hundreds of followers under their direction for territorial expansion.

For newly opened region or territory during their head hunting days, their tuai menoa allocated settlement areas to their followers and their young men who displayed courage in the battlefield were entitled to called bujang berani or “brave bachelor”. In the old days, they were truly warriors and they led and were never wanted to be led by other people. So, they fought against the Rajahs.

Their bravery helped young Malaysia grew to what it is today. Malaysia needed them in early years and in time of peace, they still served the nation well. Iban were good trackers and their service in the Royal Malaysian Rangers was exemplary and many were awarded with bravery awards for their prowess in fighting the insurgencies.

Their display of bravery was consistent with their motto, “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban”.In Rangers, they also displayed not only exceptional courage, but, also exemplary leadership and discipline.

Brookes Changed Iban ( Sea Dayak) Leadership...!!!!

Things now changed. They no more led, but, were led by others through their leaders. Why and how could this happen? One thing for sure about the Iban people was that, the Iban or Dayaks in general were good, honest and obedient followers.

The Brookes were smart and when they ruled Sarawak, they appointed Iban warriors as native chiefs. It was through these native chiefs that Brooke’s rule became more peaceful and Sarawak’s territory then expanded.

The British who took over from Brookes also did the same thing and this strategy worked well to keep the Iban in peace with the government. Iban people lived simple lives and were never demanding and it was their culture taught them to respect and be obedient to their elders or tuai.In the longhouses, their tuai who headed their longhouses were called tuai rumah.

These tuai rumah were powerful figures and they provided the link with the government. The anembiaks in the longhouses in return for their loyalty and obedience to their tuai rumah will get some subsidies in terms of fertilizers, some granite for their roads which normally were distributed to them as “election installments”. That is, these subsidies will only normally be distributed when elections were around. However, the Iban could not simply get these subsidies unless their tuai rumah were obedient and loyal to the government.

The BN government held them under 'political ransom' and the present system will continue to make them so.Therefore, until today the system of tuai rumah has been maintained and given the few hundred ringgits as monthly allowances, these tuai rumah had then been instrumental in controlling and influencing their anembiaks to be obedient and loyal to the government. With the exceptional loyalty as trademark and embedded as a culture, the Barisan Nasional government has until now since independence ruled Sarawak through Iban patronage.

That also prolonged Pehin Sri Taib, a Melanau and a Muslim as the Chief Minister of Sarawak. With that, Taib may wish to perpetuate the Melanau dynasty which began from his uncle Tun Rahman, in ruling Sarawak, by making his son, Sulaiman as the next chief minister.

Kuala Lumpur followed Brookes...!!!

When Malaysia was formed in September 16, 1963, the federal government in Kuala Lumpur also followed Brooke. They knew, Apai Jugah was too influential among the Ibans ( Sea Dayak) and other Dayaks. They respected and were loyal to Apai Jugah. So as not to rock the peace already established through Brookes’ rule, the federal government then appointed Apai Jugah as a Federal Minister. With Apai Jugah, the Iban just continued to get some subsidies.

The Iban together with the Melanaus and Malays in Malaysia were Bumiputera, but, the Iban until today could not enjoy what the Malays could get.Gone was Apai Jugah, the BN government perpetuates Iban loyalty to the government by absorbing Iban ( Sea Dayak) leaders and politicians into the government. These leaders were given posts and many perks. The few leaders, like Jabu, Moggie, Masing, Mawan, Entulu, were said very rich. So, the story continues. The Iban ( Sea Dayak) never then led, but, was led through their leaders.

What the Iban got until now were subsidies and not capitals for the development of the community. The majority of the Iban will continue to be poor. While their leaders lived in big towns and cities could enjoy piped water and driving luxurious cars with oil palm plantations from Native Customary Rights (NCR) lands giving them perpetuating income and wealth, the majority of the Iban will see themselves poor and to live without proper water and electricity supply.

In return for their wealth they got from their positions in the government, these Iban leaders who presently are in the government will continue to tell the Iban people that only BN government could give the Iban subsidies in the longhouses. This was of course true, but, the Iban ( Sea Dayak) did not realize that the giving to them subsides will continue to make them poor. It would be different, if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the government. Instead of subsidies, the Iban will get capitals to start their lives.

The Iban ( Sea Dayak) now has no political warriors who are capable to lead the community against the Barisan Nasional and against the dominance of the Melanau-Malays in Sarawak politics.Ningkan an Iban from Betong who was supported by many Chinese tycoons in his days was too aggressive.

His display of the typical Dayak arrogance and bravery was seen a threat by the federal government led by the Malays from UMNO, who then politically kicked him out of his chief ministership.Ningkan who displayed exceptional political courage and leadership of an Iban warrior, Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban, was seen a threat to UMNO rule in Sarawak through Melanau-Malays.

These Melanau-Malays were mostly Muslims, but, is not a large group in the state.Had Ningkan not been toppled, Iban today would be under a better umbrella had enjoyed better lives. Maybe, it was and still is the policy of federal government to see that Iban should not become the governor and chief minister of Sarawak.

This was made more difficult in recent years after the amendment of the State Constitution because, it seems that to be a governor, the governor must be a Muslim and in the case of Iban, this would be something almost impossible as most Ibans are Christians.Due to the amendment of the State Constitution, the Iban, like the Chinese, would also find themselves difficult to become Speakers of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN).

Iban (Sea Dayaks) Must Change...!!!!

DAP and PKR are here to change the Iban lives, but, if Iban people refuses to change nothing much DAP and PKR could do. Iban leaders like, Jabu, Masing, Mawan, Sylvester Entri, Peter Nyarok and Francis Hardin, being senior Iban politicians could bring better change to the Iban community, but, it seems that they prefer to be led and not to lead.

They should be the Iban political warriors taking lead to bring the Iban to greater heights. They should realize that Iban being the largest race in Sarawak should lead and not be led by the minorities.Never, at anytime I heard them speaking against any of the policies put up by the government.

They lacked political courage to speak against the evils of the government and when they saw Taib coming to the Dewan Undangan Negeri, they all rushed towards him, trying to get Taib’s attention. Sometimes, I observed that when Taib saw them coming, Taib just shook their hands with them, but, with his face turning away looking at others around! So if Iban people want to change themselves, they should no more be dependent on their present leaders. Instead, they have to take the lead themselves, throw away their present leaders and change the government.

The Iban people have lost its grip in power and the only way to overcome this is to change the government. So, the coming Batang Ai by-election will a testing ground for Iban Baru ( New Sea Dayak ) or New Iban ( New Sea Dayak ) Whoever be fielded by the Opposition against the BN in Batang Ai, the Iban people, please rise up to the occasion to support the candidate for a change.

He is your Iban Baru!

I’m not an old outdated citizen of Sarawak, experienced hand at politics. But I am now seasoned enough to have learned that the hardest thing about any political campaign is how to win without proving that you are unworthy of winning!!
I do not believe that any political campaign justifies the declaration of a moratorium on ordinary common sense.
A campaign is about defining who you are - your vision, your mission, your objectives and your opponent’s vision/wants.
The aim for each Vote is being analyze, selected, nominated and wins the Election N29 Batang Ai, Sarawak that you have decided well to choose your course of prosperity, defend your rights, protect the Laws of Justice, your native lands, your bangsa not for you but for generations to come!!

Battle Royale For Batang Ai - Part 2

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Despite earlier assurance by the EC chairman that the Batang Ai by-election will not be of the same date as the ones for the two Bukits in West Malaysia, it is now confirmed that all the three by-elections will be held simultaneously after all; nomination is on the 29th of March (Sunday) and polling will be on the 7th April (Tuesday), allowing 8 days of campaigning.Advantage one for BN/PRS Sarawak.PKR leaders will be spread out in the two Bukits and across the South China Sea and deep into the Dayak Iban hinterland of Batang Ai.

The travels alone will be energy sapping, not to mention the logistics of it all.Upon reaching Kuching International Airport, they will have to travel by road to Lubok Antu and there from to the various longhouses crises-crossing Batang Ai, and, depending on the roster, they will have to cross "another sea" of the vast Batang Ai dam into the Delok and Engkari, or the Lamanak in the eastern part of this rural State constituency.

There will be very limited accommodation and food outlets, unless they want to stay at the expensive and yet very inconvenient Hilton Batang Ai, as it is located at the other side of the lake. Halal food? Almost none anywhere in Lubok Antu! For BN/PRS these will be of no problems. For accommodations, the troops can stay at the SESCO

Township bungalows, the government quarters and the Klingkang Inn in Lubok Antu Town. There will be of course the brand new Euro copter choppers to ferry VVIPs/ campaigners all over the more remote areas of the constituency.

Then there is the bottomless pit of the BN finance and logistics, not to mention the endless contributions from individuals/towkays/lobbyists, you name it.Plus, the enormous advantage of having the bigwigs of the State Civil Service and all government departments and agencies and State Government linked companies to assist and beef up the BN Election machinery. The odds will be heavily stacked against the PKR.

The logistics, operations and the administration of the campaign will be nightmarish, to say the least. PKR can never match the Sarawak BN in these areas. It is always very difficult to unseat a seat that has been held by the incumbent State Government for many terms, more so in a by-election as it is.With all the campaign war crimes, promises of better lives and living, the issues, all and sundry, it is up to the voters of Batang Ai to decide.
